Makoko offers an aerial-perspective encounter with the famous floating community of Lagos. Perched at the stern of his boat, an oarsman in a bright yellow-orange shirt uses a long pole to steer his vessel through shimmering waters, heading past double-story wooden shacks supported by stilts. The community is built from grey-and-white tonal slabs that give the stilt architecture sculptural volume, while delicate golden reflections streak across the foreground water. The artwork serves as an important cultural document, capturing both the environmental precarity and the vibrant self-sufficiency of the community.
